墓地によく咲く事から、幽霊花(ゆうれいばな)、地獄花(じごくばな)と呼ばれる事もありますが、反対に吉兆を示す花として曼珠沙華(まんじゅしゃげ)とも呼ばれます。
曼珠沙華という名には、天界に咲く花という意味があり、仏教ではめでたい出来事の前触れとし語られています。
